You have secured a job interview. Great work. Now you are asking yourself - "What questions will I ask at a job interview?"

You are entitled to ask questions at a job interview- and indeed it you are likely to be given the opportunity to do so. Asking good quality questions will absolutely, positively increase your chances of success.

Ask about the business first of all. You need to establish whether It is the right company for you and whether youa are the right person for them - ie., will this be a good fit, or at least a good enough fit?

You will need to have done your research on the company - eg., check out their website. What’s their vision for your position? Will it evolve over time? What is the opportunity for promotion? What are the expansion plans of the business? Good questions will impress!

Possible job interview questions you could ask?

Can you tell please explain what the role involves on a day to day basis?

May I ask what why the previous person in the role left?

What are the standard working hours - and what overtime is likely to be expected?

What is your company’s organisational structure and management style?

What computer equipment and software do you use (if applicable)?

What is your company’s market or target demographic? Is that something that you would like to expand? If so, how?

What is your vision for the organisation over the next 5 years?

Remember to rehearse asking questions. Knowing the right job interview questions to ask is a very important part of the job interview process.

Questions not to ask at a job interview!

Salary should only be asked about in the latter part of the interview. For a professional role, where there is more than one job interview, salary should not be mentioned at all, but is best left to the employment consultant or you if necessary in the next round of interviews - unless, of course, the employer asks the question first.

Never ask questions that relate to you "getting more experience". Companies want to hear that you are there for the long term, not a short term gig to rack up more experience.

Remember - you are part of this process too!

A job interview - with the best candidates - is a negotiation. It is a two way street - and you are both participating in the job interview process. The job interview is the time where both parties determine together whether you taking on the role will work well. Always be confident, respectful and prepared.
